French term or phrase: compétence en
Salut!

This term appears in an 'attestation of good standing' as follows:

il est egalement titulaire des disciplines suivantes:

-Qualification en MEDECINE GENERALE
-Competence en MEDECINE LEGALE
-Competence en MEDECINE APPLIQUE AUX SPORTS.

I am not certain if this best translates as 'qualification in' or simply 'competency/competence in' or something else and would appreciate some advice.

Merci!

trained in/ certified
Explanation:
I have to agree with the glossary. The term has nothing to do with proficiency in, but rather with being trained for and hence being allowed to practice. As in the 'diplôme de compétence en langues' which allowes you to practice as a teacher; it does not merely prove that you are proficient. The term 'comptence/y' also exists in English.

The two terms listed are specialisations which need a seperate certificate at least, if not specialisation studies. Otherwise, one may not take a job involving it.

Explanation:
the glossary offers 'trained in' but I think your context indicates something more.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: I would stick with "proficient in' as if the doctor were trained and had qualifications in the areas to which he claims "compétence", he would no doubt say so. Cf DRManu49's caveat here : http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/medical_general/...
