French term or phrase: au retrait du diplôme
I am confused by this little sentence on a medical degree from the University of Mali. It stands alone on the certificate. I am hoping someone here has come across it before and explain this to me:

N.B.: Une seule attestation est délivrée; au retrait du diplôme, l'Étudiant devra présenter la même attestation.

I know it's late, but... why would the diploma be withdrawn? And to whom would this certificate then be presented?

Many thanks!

upon retrieval of the diploma

Explanation:
What you are translating is the "attestation (provisoire) du diplome". This document is delivered immediately after passing the exam or thesis; the diploma is delivered months after when everybody who needs to sign it has done so. Many people never bother to retrieve the actual diploma as they have usually 'moved on' and the "attestation" is as good as the diploma itself - does not look as fancy, though.

Yes, but you can do without the official diploma in most instances.

agree  gallagy2: like your explanation but not "retrieval". Maybe "receipt" may be better? And CCS is right, it's a degree

agree  Ingeborg Gowans: receipt fits better here

neutral  laenai: The sentiment is correct but "retrieve" is not very natural English. We "collect" it or "pick it up" (although the latter is too informal for context)
