French to English translations [PRO]
Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
French term or phrase: av
This appears in the stamps on the back of a diploma from the Notre Dame University of Haiti, in which someone is verifying the information is a true copy of the register.

It occurs twice:
1) after the name of the Assistant Director of Legal Affairs for the Ministry of National Education, like so:
Mrs. X, av
Assistant Director etc.......

and
2) after the name of the Director of Foreign Affairs:
Mr. Y, av
Director of Foreign Affairs, etc....

Does anyone know what this stands for? Is it something untranslatable?

Thanks
roseh

Esq. (Esquire) or Attorney

Explanation:
Sorry for the late answer :)

"av" stands for "avoué", a kind of lawyer/attorney, usually working for the state, but their specific role depends on each country's legal system.
In this particular case, it is more of an honorific title, indicating that both persons graduated in law. It can be translated by "Esq."

In other cases, where its use indicates the actual position of a person, it can be translated by "Attorney" or "Attorney-at-law".
