Definition a part (if the top product is in the liquid state) or all (if the top product is in the vapour phase) of the condensed top vapour of a fractionating column, which is returned to the top of the column. The purpose is to create an extra downward flow of liquid; if properly applied this liquid acts as an absorbing agent for the relatively heavy components which are thus rejected from the top product
