French term or phrase: retard
Hello. I am struggling with the notion of "retard" in relation to the study of waves. I thought perhaps it referred to a time delay, but then I saw that it was being represented with the Greek symbol tau, which is used for the period of a wave.
Here is the first example of the term in my text:
Here are further examples:

Any suggestions would be very much apprecited, thanks :)

delay time
Explanation:
Waves/chemistry not my field, but here are some references:

"We investigate the effects of wave localization on the delay time tau (frequency sensitivity of the scattering phase shift) of a wave transmitted through a disordered wave guide."
http://arxiv.org/abs/cond-mat/0103113

"Photons with wave-vector k(b) arriving after a delay time tau(d) that is smaller than the dephasing time T(2( of the polarization produce an interference grating." [brackets used for subscripts]
http://www.physik.uni-marburg.de/of/dynamics/shdiff.html

So perhaps "delay time" is right. ;-)

agree  Zareh Darakjian Ph.D.: This is the acceptable term in the context of waves. This delay is reflected in the subtraction that appears in the wave equation (t - tau). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sine_wave

Explanation:
delay time could be confused with the scope settings! according to the Routledge technical, lag is suggested
