direct chlorination process (using Boiling Reactor Technology)
Explanation:
1. Under the direct chlorination method, ethylene and chlorine (obtained from electrolysis of salt) react within a catalyst-containing reactor to form the intermediate material EDC. EDC is then thermally cracked to yield VCM at a few hundred °C. When the hydrogen chloride obtained as by-product from the above method reacts with ethylene in the presence of catalyst and air (or oxygen), EDC is obtained again

2. EDC DIRECT CHLORINATION Process using Boiling Reactor Technology and DIRECT CHLORINATION Catalyst
In the DIRECT CHLORINATION process, EDC is produced by the exothermal addition of chlorine to ethylene in liquid EDC phase. In the Vinnolit process a special complex is used as catalyst, which is a remarkable improvement in comparison to the normally used iron chloride catalyst.
The catalyst suppresses the formation of by-products. Therefore the reaction can be carried out at a substantially higher temperature, whereby heat recovery is possible. The catalyst is fed to the reactor loop under normal operation. There is no catalyst consumption.

The catalyst can be used in a liquid-loop reactor as well as in a boiling reactor for the full temperature range between 50 – 125 °C. The EDC thus produced has a quality which allows the direct feed to the EDC cracker without distillation.
