I am struggling with this term. " On the circuit"? is close but what do they mean by this term here. I could guess but I am wondering if this is a word with a specific meaning that might be known to a French mother tongue person. The text is refering to a well-known director trying to break into Hollywood in the 1960s: underground, art house, or something completely different like 'specialist audience' ) Any ideas? So far I have come up with'destined for audiences outside the mainstream' but does anyone know if this means black market?

Replies in French or English.

art-house circuits

Explanation:
Mainstream movies are distributed in cinemas such as UGC, PATHÉ, etc. Less commercial movies go into local "art houses", unaffiliated cinemas

neutral  xxxmediamatrix: "un nudie, film légèrement vêtu" (i.e. soft porn) hardly qualifies as 'art-house' cinema.

-> It does no, but that's the independent circuit where such movies would be shown. That why I put art in quotes in my explanation...

agree  Stephanie Ezrol: Definintely used in the U.S. in the 60s for soft porn

I think it is the meaning here:

PARALLÈLE, adj. et subst.
(...)

from Wikipedia

"In the 1960s "art film" became a euphemism in the US for racy Italian and French B-movies. By the 1970s, the term was used to describe sexually explicit European films with artistic structure such as I Am Curious (Yellow). In the US, the term "art film" is sometimes used very loosely to refer to the broad range of films shown in repertory theaters or "arthouse cinemas."

This coheres with my memory of that period. I would prefer a word other than circuit, but I can't think of one at the moment.
