French to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Cinema, Film, TV, Drama / si elle ne laisse plus aucune trace en vous
French term or phrase: si elle ne laisse plus aucune trace en vous
(Last time I didn't provide enough context. This time I'm making up for it)

This is from a series of interviews with Abbas Kiarostami, the Iranian film director, that has already been translated from Farsi, so this is a second, if not third translation. I have been working closely with someone on this project, also from Italian... there is often some really odd stuff, but Kiarostami is a pretty odd kind of guy to begin with. A fascinating man nevertheless.

Here's the entire text :

Basically it's the entire phrase "Je crois malgré tout........plus aucune trace en vous", but I can't put that all in one Kudoz question. But I think it's necessary to take the whole phrase and reword it entirely otherwise it is incomprehensible, not to mention already pretty odd in French, probably even in Farsi :)

Explanation:
"I do, however, believe we are subject to influences, though an influence is only really authentic when it leaves no trace in you at all".
I think the problem here is understanding the exact meaning of "original". He is saying something deliberately contradictory, but to make a point: if he were aware of the influence of say Italian neo-Realism on him then he would merely be "copying" what he had seen there. As it is, it may be an influence he is unaware of - and this is what makes it authentic, "original".
Don't forget this is the maker of "Certified Copy" among many other brilliant works...!

Another way of phrasing the idea.

The "in you" seems redundant.
