French term or phrase:nourrir
"Cette liste nourrit une colonne de type Recherche dans la liste principale, par exemple une colonne qui afficherait une liste déroulante."
From an instruction manual on SharePoint. Subsection is called "Liste gérable par les clients (secondaire)" Manual is on creating business solutions using SharePoint.
Canadian French.
I looked in half-a-dozen FR-EN IT dictionaries on-line, but can't find nourrir.
'Populate' is used with this meaning in social sciences/statistics, but I can't find any Microsoft or other software sources to corroborate. Perhaps 'populate' is not software jargon.
As always, a reference URL would be greatly appreciated.
Explanation: The term "populate" is commonly used in this context in software documentation. Here are a few examples:
http://www.jdisc.com
"IT organizations use JDisc Discovery to initially ***populate*** or validate CMDB contents, prepare migration or consolidation projects or prepare outsourcing activities."
http://www.idsdatanet.com/ids-drillnet-drilling-reporting-so...
"Analyser output may be used to auto-***populate*** 'End of Well' reports and custom-built monthly and annual reports. Output from the Data Analysis Tool can also be customised to allow data transfer into company standard reports and to ***populate*** 'Rushmore Review' DPR and CPR data sheets."
If the list is filled in when the screen first appears and doesn't change while the screen is displayed, use populate. If it changes dynamically without leaving and returning to the screen, use feed. Populate is a one-time process, feed is continuous.
Microsoft definition of populate: "To import prepared data using a software procedure rather than the end user entering the information."; as I encounter it, it's standardly applied to a one-time operation e.g. when creating a new table. If that's what's going on here, then maybe, but that wasn't my impression at first reading.
The term "populate" is used in software documentation all the time. I think it is the most appropriate term here.
