Bus/Financial - Computers (general) / Office computing
French term or phrase: fichiers bureautiques
In a list of the kinds of data handled by an archiving system.

Now, it means "word-processing / spreadsheet / presentation / etc. files" -- that is, all files produced by "office" software of whatever kind -- but I can't quite put my finger on a nice *concise* English equivalent which is neither under- nor over-specific.

Any inspirations?

Desktop files
Explanation:
It may include most of what a fichier bureautique is.

thanks Phillipe, this one was a hard choice: there was an element of the right answer in all the suggestions. my draft had "office documents", which drew no comment, but in the end I felt a little happier with "desktop files".

Explanation:
I suppose if you know for sure what suite of applications it is talking about (e.g. Microsoft Office - which comprises word, outlook, excel etc.) you could use that somehow... E.g. 'Microsoft Office files','Files produced by Microsoft Office applications'

general office application files

Explanation:
trickier than it ought to be, this one.

I suggest the above (small "o" as we may not be talking about MS software).

The distinction is, of course, between these and the specific apps used by the business lines and support services.

I see your point Miranda and, yes there may be some ambiguity.
But I feel the people reading and working from Martin's document will know enough about IT to realise that we wouldn't be talking about archiving executable files - they are all already safely housed on a server and backed up, but rather the output from the users of these applications. I think this is self-evident.

office automation files

Explanation:
GDT gives office automation for "bureautique".
I think that this is the best way of getting away from the problem of who makes the suite in question.
A few searches for "office automation files" with google comes up trumps.

A common abbreviation for this is O.A.
Dictionnaire Informatique Anglais/Français - Ginguay
O.A. = bureautique
hence
O.A. buff
O.A. market
O.A. products
etc.

Why not O.A. files?

Notes to answerer
Asker: Mark has a point, "hits" are not the same as a "bullseye". The term "office automation" did cross my mind, but I hesitated because it seems very dated now.

neutral  Marc Glinert: 119 hits, Miranda, but - as so often is the case - you prove the term exists but not that it fits our desired meaning.
