French to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Computers (general) / sculpture casting | | French term or phrase: numérisation informatique en 3-D | This is an artist speaking - an American, so it was originally in EN, if that makes any difference. She is talking about making life casts, here specifically of her head. I don't know enough about computer technology to be absolutely sure about the technique she is talking about. Someone suggests she use computer digitization, I presume. What confuses me is why she refers to it 'en 3-D' and then says "l'impression en 3-D" as well. I understand the impression to be the result of the casting, i.e. the cast head, but maybe I am missing some computerish meaning. Or is it just waffly reported speech? Please assist.
"Quelqu’un m’a suggéré d’utiliser la numérisation informatique en 3-D et l’impression en 3-D, ce qui me permettrait de faire un moulage de ma tête et de le réduire à la taille que je désirais." |

| | 3D computer scanning / 3D printing | Explanation: You can translate the entire sentence literally.
3D scanning is a process a bit like 2D scanning used to scan flat documents, except that it also records data for the third dimension (relief).
3D printing can refer to several printing techniques that build up layers of 'ink' (usually with solid additives to give greater thickness to each successive layer) to recreate the relief of the original scanned object. There are other 'printing' techniques that work the other way - they start with a block of material and use a computer-controlled laser or other cutting device, driven by the 3D scanner data, to remove unwanted material and leave the 'printed' 3D replica.

No, don't translate as 'prototype' (which is something rather specific) - just put the generic term '3D printing' and your translation will be just as clear (or vague) as the French :)

Asker: So I should understand the 'impression' here to mean 'print' or 'print out'?

Asker: Thanks very much for your help. I am still unclear about what exactly I should use to translate 'l'impression' here. Do I need to say 'prototype' as in the link given? Can you tell me what sounds natural, please?
Asker: Thank you so much.
