"digitization" is not more "general" but more "trechnical"
"scanning" is more "general" since to "digitize" a document you need to "scan" it.

Rob has made a good point about the difference between the two terms. 'Scanner' is the term used for the piece of kit I have on my desk, and that's what the maker calls it, but certainly it does digitise (UK) or digitize (US). Scanning is more likely to be understood by the man in the street.

liz askew: So how would you say "digitis/zation" in French?//Er..so are you sayiing that the French use "numérisation" to mean both "digitis/zation and scanning".

-> IATE and GDT are both clear about it - numérisation, whether we have s or z. GDT helpfully says that the s and z versions in EN are synonyms.//"Un scanner" is the common word for 'a scanner' in my experience. See Discussion, above.

-> Thanks.Maybe; 'scanning' is the commonest digitisation method for 'the man in the street' that I mentioned above.Both terms are used by Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents in www.csad.ox.ac.uk.There is no real FR word for scanner-see eg HP catalogue
