French term or phrase: FI
FI is a term which crops up frequently in a database of on-screen messages and other phrases related to telecommunications software.

I had thought at first that FI was faisceau d'information (in English IB, Information Bundle), but am not sure. Also, the abbreviations may well be from English, as many of the terms used in this text, most in fact I would say, use abbreviations of English terminology in both the French and English versions.

Some examples from the text are as follows:

I'd be very grateful if anyone more experienced in the computer field could share their thoughts on this one...

IF

Explanation:
Possibly Intermediate Frequency - Fréquence Intermédiaire,
but more likely
Image Frequency - Fréquence Image

NOT
image frequency: In radio reception using heterodyning in the tuning process, an undesired input frequency that is capable of producing the same intermediate frequency (IF) that the desired input frequency produces. (188) Note: The term image arises from the mirror-like symmetry of signal and image frequencies about the beating-oscillator frequency.

BUT

Microprocessor Controlled Graphics Modes
12 modes, including 9 user definable modes
Input Signal
Line Frequency
31.5 - 63 kHz multi-frequency
Image Frequency (Refresh Rate)
56.3 - 75.0 Hz

Actually, the terms SVGA and XGA are not used much anymore. Instead we are looking at resolution, image frequency and color depth.

Good thinking, but it's definitely FI rather than F1. Thanks in any case.

Really no specific knowledge here, but this is the only French term I've ever encountered personally that could conceivably be anything to do with your abbreviation!
