Explanation:
I don't think the translation of "search portal" actually refers to the concept mentioned in Ms. Mends' source text. Perhaps something like "in-house search tool" might be more appropriate, since I think what is meant is a search mechanism for the publisher's site itself whose internal workings may or may not be the responsibility of some third party. A definition of "search portal" from about.com follows below.

Basically, this is a term that loosely covers a large search engine or directory (such as Google or Yahoo), that have expanded themselves from just a search service to offer a huge variety of resources. The main idea behind a search portal is that you really only need to go to one website.
