I have 'lames' and totems in a new layout for all the signposts in a town

Are the lames on the totem??
Explanation:
Could the "totem" be the sign POST proper (the vertical bit) and the "lames" the "arrows", the bits on which directions are written? So if you come to a T-junction and find one direction sign pointing to the left and one to the right, the whole would indeed look like (the top of) a totem pole.

What to call them though?
