French to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Construction / Civil Engineering / airport extension | | French term or phrase: OPM | | This is a specifications document for an airport extension. One of the requirements is "...une couche de sous-fondation en graveleux latéritiques après compactage à 90% de **O.P.M** de 20cm." I've searched high-&-low in Fre and Eng but can't pin down this acronym. Any ideas anyone? |

OPM here refers to the optimum moisture content measured using the modified Proctor test (as opposed to the standard test). Soils will be more or less easily, more or less densely compacted, depending on their moisture content.
For the same soil, OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT for a MODIFIED PROCTOR test is less than optimum moisture content for a standard Proctor test while maximum dry ...

MODIFIED PROCTOR Test – A COMPACTION test that attempts to determine the maximum possible density of a soil by performing a series of test on a compacted sample of the soil. For each test, the amount of water present in the sample at the time of compaction is varied. A plot of the results, comparing water content (horizontal axis) to relative dry density (vertical axis) is then made. The plot usually resembles a bell curve. The plot provides the maximum possible dry density achievable by the soil and the optimum water content necessary to achieve that density. Results of the Modified Proctor test are used by contractors to determine the proper range of water content of the fill necessary to meet the District’s specified compaction requirements. Modified Proctor Tests are usually performed by a soils engineer many months before construction begins. Field Density tests are used to compare Densities achieved in the field to the theoretically maximum density determined by the Modified Proctor Test.

Note that even in Mediamatrix's first example above, the text goes on to say:
Apres compactage, chaque couche de remblais devra garantir au moins 90% de la densite seche de l’OPTIMUM PROCTOR MODIFIE (OPM). La couche superieure doit presenter une compacite atteignant 95% de l’OPM sur 15 cm d’epaisseur au moins |

| Grading comment It's clear later in the document that this refers to the "Optimum Proctor Modified" test and that it refers to the stiffness of the material and not to its smoothness. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

Explanation: OPM is an English abbreviation for 'orthonormal propagator method' which is a standard method for determining the smoothness of a surface (almost any surface, from the bearings of a rotating machine to the surface of road or airport runway).
