Explanation:
The definition given is NOT that of "aiguilles" but of "cable stays". A cable-stayed bridge is one where cables fan out from a tower or towers and support the deck (as opposed to a suspension bridge where cables hang parabolically between two towers and in turn suspend cables called hangers or suspenders which support the deck).

"Aiguilles" are cables attached to a plane/array of stay cables to prevent vibration due to wind.

Diversely known as:
aiguille (aka aguille d'interconnexion) “ 'aiguille' or secondary cable”
aiguille (aka aguille d'interconnexion) stabilizing cable (À NE PAS CONFONDRE AVEC LES CÂBLES DE STABILISATION = anchor cable)
aiguille (aka aguille d'interconnexion) secondary tuning rope (nylon & inox)
aiguille (aka aguille d'interconnexion) damping tie, cross cable, cross-tie cable, tie-down cable
aiguille (aka aguille d'interconnexion) ties

I translated the French Ministry of Public Works' recommendations on stay cables some years ago. From memory the term chosen in conjunction with their engineers was "stabilizing cable".
