Of course for Comrade Lenin it was one step forward, two steps back, but he was not in a happy mood that day ;-)

go forward, but go backwards

Explanation:
it mean that you go forward (because you don't have any other choice) or because it is the best possible issue) but you feel like going backwards.

ex. if you are in the bush and the fire is rapidly coming towards you you run but you now have a large river to cross but cannot swim. What is your choice; most likely you will jump in the river and try and swim.

go forward, but go backwards does not sound good but you might find something more suitable.

Good luck.

beat a hasty retreat

Explanation:
is what it means. I wouldn't waste time translating it literally, however good the suggestions. Go for the IDEA

To be honest/frank, at first sight, it looks as though your best bet would be to beat a hasty retreat - get the hell out of there as fast as your legs can carry you

to get nowhere, to make no progress

Explanation:
Not sure how to incorporate it into your context-less sentence, but this is the usual meaning.

approach warily

Explanation:
"avancer à reculons" means you advance, but would much prefer to retreat.
To me the image is a combination of: (1) horror movie victim (soon to die) checking out that noise in a dark corridor, (2) a child being dragged to school, and (3) a cow by a fence: it'll edge forward to greet you, but be ever ready to jump back if you make a sudden movement.

For this context, I'd plump for image 3 - "sincerely, at first sight it's enough to make you approach it warily"
Could be better...
