French term or phrase:produits de bouche
From a text describing Christmas markets in France:
120 chalets présentent pour le plaisir des yeux et des papilles des plus jeunes comme des plus grands, des idées de cadeaux, de l'artisanat venant de tous les pays, des décorations et des décors de Noël, ***des produits alimentaires et de bouche*** pour créer des tables de fête.
What's the difference between produits alimentaires and produits de bouche?
If you google "produits de bouche" you will see that its usage has gone way beyond the Belgian borders and pretty consistently is applied to prepared foods (including wines and other elaborated drinks) ; plats regionaux, vins, etc. You're probably right, it probably is related closely to "métiers de bouche." I think that "foodstuffs" is more "produits alimentaires" than "produits de bouche."
Belgianese overlaps into France, some of it as far as the village 4km down the road from me in Normandy. @Emiledgar: You're in Belgium. Is that a Belgian usage? I'd have based it on "métiers de bouche" which as far as I'm concerned ranges from the butcher to the chef gastronomique, though arguably maybe not down to the farmer in his hobnail boots.
"Produits de bouche" are prepared fine foods as opposed to just "produits alimentaires" ie grown or raised food; for instance the difference between buying a prepared lasagna, and buying pasta , meat , tomatoes, cheese.
Explanation: Difficult to be sure, but I believe Tony wmay be right when he says that it could be prepared foods and the base ingredients.
If that is indeed so, then foodstuffs would be the base ingredients part. This patent application uses both foodstuffs and food products and shows the difference quite clearly:- foodstuffs have to be processed to produce food products:
