Cooking / Culinary / Breadmaking
French term or phrase: pains bien-être
A type of bread that appears in a recipe book for a breadmaker.
The other types are: "pains sucrés" (including, pain au lait, pain aux fruits secs, etc.) - sweet bread, "pains salés" (including, pain de campagne, pains aux herbes fraiches, etc.) - savoury bread, and "autre" (including, cakes, pizza dough).
The bread recipes that appear under "pains bien-etre" include: pain aux céréales, pain complet and pain sans gluten.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Healthy Breads
Explanation:
In the US this is often used. It is grammatically incorrect but one gets the point, the bread is good for you.

agree  philgoddard: Yes, grammatically incorrect, like "technologies".

neutral  Sheila Wilson: I like it even less than you! Are we talking about loaves that can run a mile, that don't smoke? :-) I prefer "health breads" as in "health foods"
10 mins
-> In the US the phrase "eat healthy" is impossible to avoid. Why can't they use "healthfully" or "healthful" or "healthily"?

-> However, with 35 million hits, healthy bread seems to be much more commonly used.

agree  Kari Foster: We must be realistic; it's one of those words that is used in a manner of which we might not approve (like "nauseous", which this bread should not be if it's "healthy") :)

neutral  Tony M: Nice idea, but I have qualms for 2 reasons: 1) despite being a lovely word, I think 'wholesome' has a slightly dated ring about it now, sometimes almost pejorative; 2) it could suggest that the other breads are by definition unwholesome.
7 mins
-> As ever, I suppose it depends on the context: in a recipe book for a breadmaker I think it could work quite well, but as I said before, I think Emil's healthy breads works too

agree  Philippa: Emil's suggestion works too, but I really like your "wholesome" idea, it just sounds nice, yummy, sort of comforting and technically right!
1 hr
-> Thanks Philippa - we have a lovely wholefood shop in our village and this is just the sort of thing they sell - all sorts of brown, wholegrain, rye bread, right up to sour dough (yum!)

agree  Cynthia Johnson: sorry I vote for wholesome is better in written lang and in marketing type lang, even though in speech people might say healthy

special breads

Explanation:
In my breadmaking booklet, gluten-free bread and those with cereals added come under the heading of Special breads.

I suppose you could use: Healthy and special breads (!)

neutral  Tony M: given that some of the other breads mentioned might be regarded as 'special' too, while 'brown bread' for example is really fairly ordinary, I don't really think this is particularly apposite here.

feel-good breads

Explanation:
Hello,

You see the expression "feel-good" a lot these days with regard to healthy foods.

This is feel-good bread and its secret is a long, slow production process. "Take those rye loaves," Alex says, pointing at a battalion of muslin-lined proving ...

neutral  Tony M: Have you ever eaten 'gluten-free bread'?! Didn't make me feel good at all, quite disgusting in fact! / There I have to disagree, M.! Double chocolate cake is 'feel-good' food, but probably not good for your body!
4 mins
-> Whether something tastes good is not what determines that something is labeled a "feel-good" food, but rather that it is good for the body. "Feel-good" in marketing speak is about a food being healthy for you, not tasting good.

health-friendly breads

Explanation:
Sickening, isn't it? Still, it opens a range of possibilities, because the gluten-free bread can then be "celiac-friendly", etc.
