French to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Economics / Employment growth | | French term or phrase: ancrage théorique | Still on my business growth article.
I have been translating this as "theoretical depth", but I can't help feeling that must be a more descriptive solution out there which mirrors the French "ancrage" better. I've toyed with foundations, but don't think that's quite right. Can anyone come up with a better suggestion?
Many thanks as ever. |

Sometimes you just get bogged down in gobbledegook..... Claire Cox: 11:47am Mar 30, 2007: I agree that "sound theoretical basis" works in the negative context, i.e. manquent de, but I also have it in a positive sense, e.g.
and I think that's what has thrown me - although the more I think about it, the addition of "sound" probably makes it work here too John Peterson: 12:21pm Mar 30, 2007: All they are saying, it seems to me, is that many previous studies have lacked a (sound) theoretical basis - too "empirical" - and that this study remedies this (e.g. the theory can be tested statistically and isn't just simple correlations or whatever)

| | theoretical foundations | Explanation: theoretical foundations sounds absolutely fine to me, but if you don't like this option Claire, try:
(lack) a sound theoretical basis

| Note from asker to answererMany thanks to you both - this is just what I was looking for, but couldn't drag from the recesses of my tired brain. The addition of "sound" makes it! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |
