government spending accounts for a major and stable percentage of GDP Explanation: I used to work for the OECD. The idea is that public expenditures (i.e., redistribution of tax revenue by the government to the private sector, public benifits or to household income via government employee salaries, general citizen benefits, and services like health insurance) in France account for a substantial percentage of the French Gross Domestic Product. That means that the government pays or subsidizes out of tax revenues a significant part of the French general economy. The OECD generally does not like this, because it thinks money should be pumped into the economy by household spending or by foreign direct investment. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-04-27 23:20:37 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Large farm subsidies in the continental EU, and indeed in the US, are examples. |
