English translation:there is a trade-off between X and Y
Explanation:
based on comparative advantage.

The context is economics, and you would NOT say 'arbitrage' for this meaning in this context.

It's too late to save the French language from 'arbitrage' being used to mean trade-off.

Arbitrage
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitrage

Trade-off: D'une manière général trade-off signifie compromis.

(Note, however, that the link to a purported Wikipédia article on Arbitrage (économie) redirects to the article on Arbitrage (droit), i.e., arbitration. Maybe there is a rearguard action going on among Wikipédia volunteers to keep the economists from having their way on this one.)

arbitrage

Explanation:
It is the same term in english because it has a French origin. It means profiting from a difference in prices. you arbitrage between the different prices the same asset has in different markets...The person who does that is called an arbitrageur...

disagree  rkillings: No, this is the more general notion of a utility-maximising tradeoff -- not a riskless trade in which you buy in one market and simultaneously sell in another.

agree  Mpoma: I think you've got the right meaning, although I think what is slightly disconcerting is that "arbitrage" used in this way in Fr is one of those trendy business neologisms: in "proper" FR I don't a figurative use of "arbitrage" in this way exists

-> Not so figurative in FR, where 'arbitrage' still means arbitration and umpiring as well as economic arbitrage. The latter is the sense that English has borrowed.
