principle


Explanation:
I understand that while the size and distribution of fluctuations has changed (and hence their pattern?), the principle of fluctuations themselves remains the same. What's happening on the ground doesn't affect the correctness of the principle.

economic rationale


Explanation:
Surely this is the kind of rationale at issue.

Logic is immutable, in the sense that it always gives the same answer on the same assumptions. When circumstances change, the answer changes but the logic doesn't. That's my beef with the way 'logique' is used in French. :-(
