This abbreviation appears in the course column of a French University transcript. The individual is specializing in languages and int. business and marketing. Could this mean "basic knowledge"?

From what I've seen in the description of courses at my and other universities (I'm working on an advanced Master's degree in psych), it usually means "acquisitions de base", or basic/core/essential courses, the heart of the matter if you will.

Major requirements


Explanation:
If you are translating this to US English, we use expression "major requirements" for what you stated. In US colleges, in addition to completing the major requirements, we also have to take considerable number of "general education requirements" (math, bio, etc.) This link explains it all.

neutral  Bruce Berger: "acquisitions de base" are not necessarily in your major subjet, they're also what are required of all students.

  -> US system makes a very clear distinction between what is required for your major and what is required for your general education. If "acq de base" can be both, how do they distinguish which is which? It's not logical to me that they would be the same...
