middle school diploma, junior high school diploma
Explanation:
These expressions, I think, will be easier for American readers to understand ... (Seems to be the equivalent of the Irish Intermediate Certificate.) I would include a footnote explaining its precise role in the French educational system.

BEPC

Explanation:
This is what we usually call BEPC in France. This certificate is to be taken by all students being in their fourth year of secondary school (14/15 year old). It has not much value.

disagree  irat56: Sorry. It used to be BEPC, but it is called now "DNB" (Diplôme National du Brevet) but it is going to change again in a short time.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: It is indeed the BEPC, as was, but is no longer. SO I agree that this is the right explanation of the term, but agree also with Irat56 - who was, until recently, headmaster of a "collège" about 15 km from me!

disagree  Meri Buettner: Agree with irat56, my daughter has the DNB (or as children say "le brevet")

Diplôme National du Brevet

Explanation:
Until now, and for a short time. Taken at the end of the 4th year in a Junior High School (Collège), or Technical School (the exam is slightly different)etc... More than 80% may succeed, hence a poor value! If you wish more details, send me an E-mail, I'll be happy to oblige.

Clarification

Explanation:

feel like we've entered the twilight zone...or the schools in the south of France have just all gone haywire ?

First cycle/Primary school graduation certificate

Explanation:
I am a little confused by the various bits of information I read here. If my memory is good, Premier cycle (etudes primaires)in France corresponds to primary school. Second cycle (etudes secondaires) corresponds to junior-high and high-school. Or are "premier et second cycles" not related to "etudes primaires et secondaires"?
