In a Certificat de Fin de Scolarité, there is the following acronym: M E F, and beneath it 5G. Any ideas as to what it might stand for?

5G = 5ème Générale
Explanation:
MEF is a data base belonging to the Ministère de l'Education Nationale. I can't remember for the moment the exact meaning, but I am pretty sure that E is for "Enseignements" (French, Latin etc...) and F for "facultatif". Ah! here it comes back: "M" is for "Moyens".
It represents the number of teaching hours a Head may rely on for such and such discipline. (I am a retired Head!!)
