As several answers and peer comments refer to primary school, I'd just like to add very emphatically that Classes Préparatoires are the first two years AFTER the Baccalaureat, (students aged 18-20). Manuel's answer is the right one!

Explanation: Just a guess. I have just asked the teacher at my daughter's school (CE2) and he couldn't help, but wondered if it was something similar to the abbreviations they use in maternelle to say if the child has acquired a skill (A= acquis, EC = en cours, NA = non acquis, etc). I thought of 'compétences de base' after I came home, but not sure how that fits in with the marks. Are these marks out of 10 or 20?
