common core classes

Explanation:
Hello,

I'm not sure, but I think this are common core classes which help students decide what they want to specialize in later on; hence, we see the word "orientation." The instruction for these courses is the same for all the students (gym, art, shop, etc). As such, there are no levels attached to this courses.

I'm no expert on the French education system. LOL

I hope this helps.

Orientation year (year 9) or Troisième

Explanation:
In France "classe d'orientation" is a term applied to Troisième, the last year of "collège" (year 9). The teaching during this year is meant to broaden the pupils' horizons, while preparing them to go on to lycée.
Orientation comes into play in Troisième through the choice of the type of lycée (Lycée Générale, Technique or Professionnel) the pupil will attend the following year. This is a decision that must be OK'd by the National Education's local division, the "Rectorat".

In response to Katsy, another possibility ( was a bit hasty in choosing level, as I was looking for another term, especially since the few sites found in English carefully avoid translating it!):

Transition year (year nine)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transition_Year
Though the curriculum is different, the term is used in Rep of Ireland at a similar stage in education.

or simply:

Year Nine (Troisième)

neutral  katsy: this is really the best explanation... but I feel doubtful about 'orientation' in EN which seems most usually to refer to induction (stages d'accueil). However, can't find anything better! sorry not to be more positive!

-> Thanks Katsy; I've made other suggestions, as I in fact was not very satisfied either with this solution.
