This is about the uniting of university laboratories working in different science fields, here the study of global change...
Context:
Ce qui peut également fédérer ce pôle qui a intrinsèquement une approche “objet”, c’est un grand chantier “Méditerranée”, objet très fédérateur entre disciplines : la tectonique, des aspects biologiques traités à Banyuls, Villefranche et sur le campus parisien, les aspects océanographie et couplage océan-atmosphère (LMD / IPSL). Ce point est d’autant plus important qu’il permettra à l’université de prendre une place très significative dans le futur chantier Méditerranée en cours de réflexion à l’INSU qui devrait faire suite au chantier AMMA (mousson africaine).

agree  Dave 72: This sounds right to me. The word "workshop" is sometimes used to describe a group of experts working together to solve a problem, but I think your translation sounds better.

Thought I would suggest this as I have heard it used to describe multi-disciplinary get-togethers on a few occasions!
