I realize now that Liz is in England and Jonathan is actually in Germany -- maybe our ProZ tags should say native speaker of either "English" or "American," the way that publishers write "traduit de l'américain" in France.

This is certainly not succinct, but I would consider adding it parenthetically after the title of the position. There is no exact equivalent of the agrégation in English, and since (in the American system anyway) we don't use "certified" for professors, but for teachers (and the requirements are nowhere close to as rigorous as the agrégation!), I think it might be misleading. Is this person in the sciences or the humanities? I'd be inclined to use "researcher" if it is a science or social science position that may involve no teaching, and "associate researcher/professor" if it is a position in the humanities where it is rare that there would be no teaching at all. Of course, I guess your translation might be intended for a British audience instead of an American one, in which case perhaps Jonathan MacKerron's ear is a better guide!
