French term or phrase: Chef d'examen
I'm translating a Swiss diploma, and it's signed by the président and the chef d'examen. Looking at a couple of bilingual Canadian websites, ( http://stds.statcan.gc.ca/soc-cnp/2006/es-re-fra.asp?cretari... and http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/Francais/GC/2001/ResultatRecherc... ) it looks like it could mean 'Chief Invigilator'. Any ideas?

neutral  Ken McKerrow: I think the headline context in the Telegraph provides some terminological leeway, probably won't find anyone with that as an official title though..

Director of Examinations

Explanation:
This term is common in industry-certification contexts, however also used in a more strictly academic context, see link. The link also describes an administrative procedure that would place the director of examinations in direct contact with the examinations process, so someone who's signature would actually likely appear on a transcript.

agree  B D Finch: As an invigilator would not sign the diploma, it must be the chief examiner.
