It's not the faculty secretariat but the office that deals with student "affaires". This would be similar to the student admin service in UK unis.

Lorsque j'étais étudiant en pharmacie (pas en Belgique), un appariteur était un employé de la fac qui était chargé de maintenir les amphis prêts pour les cours et de préparer les laboratoires pour les TP.
I'll know when know what apparitoriat really is. There is no more context than what I've already given you. I just believe now that it is not a place but a POSITION and that a student can apply for it. It seems to be a person the students can contact. But I may be wrong...
At least it's clear now that it IS the place. If you google "appariteur" and you select .be only websites (so google appariteur site:.be) you will see that the "appariteur" has a sort of technical/administrative/caretaking role. I would just call it "administration"
SO sorry SJLD! My misreading - no excuse, end of a busy day! I think the Louvain job description sheds the most light. "Place" was too literal (I needed tea), yes, more the status - "office" in the broader sense.
I actually said it's UNLIKELY to be a place but rather a status or period, as in "internat" (period of being an intern). But really it's not clear what is going on here...
Anne, perhaps it would be helpful if you gave the sentence where the word "apparitoriat" appears?
And, when you post that new question, please be sure to let us know your target audience, since beadle/beadleship are very UK specific and would mean next to nothing to a US readership.
Further down in the same translation, right down at the bottom as a contact person, I've just found a Mrs. So-and-so, "apparitrice". Come to think of it, it is a Notre-Dame something. Would beadle fit here? And can one apply for "beadleship"?
It's not a matter of just knowing the word, it's the context that determines how to translate it into English. e.g. "fil" might be thread, wire, grain, linen...We need to know exactly how it's used. A whole sentence generally helps. I still stick by my answer that it's a PLACE (backed up bySJLD) ratherthan the job title or the person who does it.
The job description in the Canadian definition is something more like "teaching assistant" in a US university - quite often someone who has already earned a B.A./B.S., and is working on a Master's degree, and is paid a salary for assisting professors and possibly teaching some classes or lab sessions, in the scientific side.
Why would anyone make reference to a Porter's Lodge / Office in a CV? Surely, in a CV, it would be much more likely to refer to the "Departmental Secretary" (or "Course Secretary).
Thanks Ann! This backs up my alternative thought of beadle for "appariteur", but that's only really Oxbridge. Yes the student in the first posting got course info there, but was probably using the term a bit loosely.
j'ai demander a **l'apparitoriat** et on m'a dit qu'il n'y avait aucun problème, on peut même prendre le cours d'anglais des 2ième année .. en tout cas pour les niveau 1 pour les niveau 2 je n'en sait rien ...

apparitoriat
Porter's lodge or office (UK)
Explanation: "Appariteur" is a college porter (campus policeman in US), so the "Apparitoriat" is his lodge or office (as secrétariat = secretary's office)

After checking the Louvain job description, "appariteur" might be translated as "caretaker", so: apparitoriat = caretaker's office, or in new-speak, = maitenance technician's office

In French it would be "scolarité" or "secrétariat pédagogique" and would be the office which deals with course administration in the broadest sense.
