French term or phrase: calcul en ligne ou posé
Good afternoon

I am translating a report for a primary school child and this comes under the section "Calcul".

Calcul en ligne ou posé.

Je sais calculer des sommes par addition ou par soustraction en colonne.

Thank you!

horizontal or column form operations
Explanation:
"Le calcul posé en colonnes n’a d’intérêt que pour les nombres d’au moins deux chiffres, et même dans ce cas, le calcul à partir de l’écriture en ligne en repérant le rang de chaque chiffre est aussi efficace et rapide que le calcul posé « en étages »."

simple and long arithmetic

Explanation:
Goodness, this question is taking me back to wobbly school desks and the sound of nails squeaking down a blackboard!

As this is a school report, I believe this refers to arithmetic (addition, substraction, multiplication and division) conducted in ones head as the sum would usually be written (7+4=11). Most people learn to carry out simple sums like this in their heads or by counting beads etc, before they progress to sums containing larger numbers (5467+735, 56 x 49 for example). These are written in column form and take the name of 'long arithmetic'.

Having good arithmetic skills means that you are able to do basic adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing; quickly, "in your head", from memory

disagree  bookwormkt: These days even long arithmetic is are done vertically, using number lines, grouping etc. Equally short 3+2+ can be presented both ways.

Horizontal or vertical (maths) calculations

Explanation:
Calculations for KS2 exams in UK are presented horizontally and vertically for simple calculations and Hundreds, Tens and Units sums. This is because pupils are taught a variety of ways of calculating, not just the way I learned in the 60s! Using number lines and different ways of grouping helps some children calculate the answers of HTU questions quickly and accurately. For other children the presentation in clearly defined columns and knowing about the decimal system is the only way to add 765 to 598.
Interestingly, some pupils with Cerebral Palsy find horizontal calculations easier than vertical, due to visual perception difficulties.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your contribution. This is corrrect too, however I have gone for "column" as later on they mention ""en ligne ou en colonne", which I really should have mentioned earlier:)
