agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Area would be my preference. Brodmann areas are still referred to by neuroscientists : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brodmann_area. For language the Wernicke and Broca areas are commonly used terms. Regions are made of of "aires".
