French term or phrase: socle tournant
This is a short bio of a candidate seeking election to the council of an educational institution. He describes his dedication to student learning and to helping students construct their identity. "Les questions existentielles que j'aborde avec mes élèves au jour le jour restent un ***socle tournant*** de notre société condamnée à vivre dans l'acception de l'autre tel qu'il est dans sa différence."

mainstay (see below)
Explanation:
There are many great options here! My top picks are "crux, nexus, linchpin, pivot point, mainstay, keystone, bedrock, at the heart of..." It depends on literal you want to keep the sentence and if you want to keep a verb like "remain" or if you want something less literal, like "still form," etc.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Works well to my mind. Also, "tournant" can be considered as conveying the idea that fundamentals come round again and again which allows a wider more interprative reading. Prefer "reflexion"

agree  ormiston: your enthusiasm is infectious; I was toying with the verb 'to hinge on' but it's hard to work into the sentence

-> Thanks! I think that is another good option. It's all in the imagery! (and then getting it to work with the sentence structure)
