Kpy,

I will have to take a GAP year or a year out - myth
It is true that some schemes place emphasis on a GAP year placement or a sandwich year placement. This is because 12 months is long enough for an employer to develop you and provide you with real responsibility.

disagree  Gabrielle Lyons: gap year is a year between school, uni, or work - typically travelling world. Sandwich is workplace training but not usually abroad.

neutral  xxxCMJ_Trans: Gabrielle is correct. There is another term and I'm dredging my memory for it....
24 mins

neutral  David Sirett: "gap year" is too broad, as most if not all gap years are not compulsory. A year abroad included as part of a univ course (eg in languages or business) is not really a gap year, as academic work continues.

disagree  Terry Moran: Gabrielle's right: in the UK, at least, the gap year is the one before you go up to university. We used to call this the "year abroad".

intercalary year

Explanation:
This term was used when I was at Uni in the 80s to describe the year abroad language students spend either at a uni or as a teaching assistant. I'm not sure it is used in broader contexts but is definitely an accepted academic term
