French term or phrase: bouton multitour
La commande par bouton multitour permet un réglage de la tension à environ 200mV près.

I think this is a knob which turns indefinitely (as opposed to only one revolution)... anyone know what the proper name for this is?

agree  xxxBourth: Though I don't think your second example is relevant! Need I go on endlessly?

-> thanks, and after re-reading the second example more carefully you're right, I must be tired

disagree  Tony M: No, that's actually something else quite specific...

multiturn control

Explanation:
Please note that this is a quite specific item, and is NOT the same as an 'endless control'

A multi-turn control will have (say) 10 or 20 turns, giving a much finer resolution of adjustment than a conventional 270° rotation potentiometer --- this is clearly what is being described here. [Confusingly, it may well be fitted with a 'slipping clutch' mechanism that makes it seem like 'endless', though in fact it isn't.]

Please note that although the French refer to it as a 'bouton', it is not really the 'knob' which is multiturn (although such things DO exist as add-on accessories), but the 'control' it is operating; if you know for sure that it is a potentiometer (which is usually the case, and is suggested by the context), then you would even do better to say 'multiturn potentiometer' or 'pot.' in familiar jargon.

On the other hand, an 'endless' control is one of those (usually) digital, optical-encoder-type controls, as commonly found on much consumer, scientific and other electronic equipment, where you can keep on turning and turning indefinitely, and some variable or other (e.g.: microwave cook time) adjusts up and down between its extreme limits. This is quite a different control, and although it MIGHT conceivably be (inaccurately) referred to as 'multitour', I think this is HIGHLY UNLIKELY in the present context.

(Please note that Sue's second reference is quite clearly a red-herring -- but I think we're all agreed on that one!)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Gee, thanks Dusty, I was a bit quick to select the previous answer and can't un-grade it... (sorry Susan) - it is indeed a potentiometer.
