French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Electronics / Elect Eng / lighting/light fittings | | French term or phrase: ballast électronique gradable DSI | Am nearing the end of a translation of notes about various lighting fixtures and just checking some technical terms I am not 100% sure of. The term in question appears in the second paragraph below. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent of the French acronym BEG (ballast electronique gradable) in this context (fluorescent lighting)? I know French uses more acronyms than English and that there might not be an English equivalent (GEB for 'gradable electronic ballast'... ?). In fact, I don't really even want to use an acronym here as I already have DSI as an acronym, but I thought I might help me to find the right term. Suggestions as to how best to translate this French term (including English word order) would be much appreciated.

DSI appears to be an already EN acronym, I think it stands for something like Digital Signal Interface, but in any case, it's an industry-standard system.
'gradable' here means it can be dimmed (most ordinary electronic ballasts can't be!) — you can see the idea: by adjusting the brightness of the three primary-colour fluorescents using 3 dimmers, their combined light output can be adjusted to a whole range of colours. We've been doing it for years in the theatre with incandescent lamps (easier to dim!), and a similar system was proposed some years ago for adjustabel-colour-temperature film lighting, but never really seems to have caught on, AFAIK. I even made a lash-up version of it myself! Nice to know the industry has caught up — 20 years later!
(BTW, this system is in practice fraught with all sorts of drawbacks!)
