From my power plant contract again:

L’évacuation de l’énergie produite par chaque unité de production se fait par un transformateur principal relié directement à un **avant-poste** blindé qui assure l’interface entre la centrale et les lignes haute-tension liaisons 400 kV).

I'm tempted to just call it a sub-station, but thought I'd better check whether anyone had come across a more specific term.

Explanation:
I don't know if there are any subtle differences, but the substation right at the power generating facility is often called a switchyard, substations down the line being at junctions, at towns, etc. This might be a way to differentiate "poste" and "avant-poste" ...

Substation - Sometimes referred to [as] a switchyard, the substation contains the transformers, switches and equipment to change the voltage levels and control the lines coming into the generating plant or mill. The substation also contains metering and relaying equipment to measure power and protect the equipment.

Explanation:

agree Alain Pommet: Yes, though seems to be American usage only and used indifferently for step-up and step-down transformers

  -> If it is US usage, then it must be my Kiwi past oozing out. Is certainly used in International Water Power and Dam Construction, a British (international) publication (Reed Business Publishing).
