Further inquiry shows that a gooseneck in plumbing does have a 180-degree bend, and Merriam-Webster agrees. Geese don't, but the piees do.

My understanding of a gooseneck is that it is a pipe or structure, at least one part of which is a 180°, or U- bend. A "crosse" is also a hook. J-pipe would be a safer, though less pleasing, bet, but I don't think gooseneck is necessarily incorrect.

Gooseneck is inappropriate because a gooseneck is a slender curved or sinuous shape that does not automativcally have a high point capable of trapping air bubbles. A j-tube has a 180-degree bend, which is a potential trap. I've just translated an example of this for a nuclear-plant's pool drain system, and the diagrams were conclusive.

I think gooseneck is OK (EDF provides the more prosaic "J-pipe"), but I would suggest "suction-side gooseneck" to improve the flow of the sentence
