French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general) / pump drive system
French term or phrase: cheminée
I am translating assembly/disassembly instructions for a belt-driven dosing pump system used in the food/pharm industries. I am currently wondering how best to translate the term 'cheminée' (it suggests that this might be the 'exhaust', but this is referred to elsewhere as the 'echappement', which made me think that the cheminée might be another part.

The term appears first in a list of parts:

'- TETE
Le sous-ensemble tête comprend les éléments suivants :
- Potence
- Plaque potence
- ***Cheminée***
- Plaque de tête
- Poulie rotation supérieure
- Flasque de roulement
- Axe carré
- Boite à roulement
- Attachement supérieur
- Flasque de roulement
- Bague roulement
- Boite à roulement
- Bague extérieure de roulement
- Poulie de rotation supérieure
- Ressort de douille de serrage
- Ressort de cloche de maintien supérieure
- Entretoise
- Entretoise de roulement

and then in some handling instructions:

Pour le transport, mettre la machine dans une caisse adaptée assurant la protection et le calage de celle-ci.

Elle peut éventuellement être transportée sur palette, les sangles devant s’appuyer entre les cheminées sur la partie plate du couvercle.

then again in some assembly instructions:

Introduire le bras dans la cheminée souhaitée en soutenant la TETE d’une main.
Laisser descendre la TETE jusqu’à ce que l’axe carré butte sur l’accouplement carré en bronze.

funnel
Explanation:
I haven't got a clear picture of this system in my mind, so this is little more than a guess.

Hope it leads to something. Good luck!

This was a very difficult one to grade, because it could have been either... in the end I just had to choose a term. I chose funnel, as it looked a bit like a funnel in the diagram when I checked it again... and vent, duct or shaft would not have fitted so well, although they all have the same meaning in such context. Thanks to all contributors.

Looking at your other question, it looks like these (cheminée and échappement) refer to the intake and outflow pipes or something similar on both sides of the pump - but NOT exhaust.
