I have just translated a 60-page tender for a maintenance contract on a fire safety system. Whilst I have managed to find most of the specific fire protection industry technical terms, there were a few that escaped me and this was one of them. Can anyone cast any light on this? Many thanks in advance. |
| | | fireman's switch | Explanation: The French implies that the fire brigade would only ever want to turn OFF the fire venting system. TTBOMK it can be a two-way thing, and the English takes this into consideration.
Contained within a Zintex metal enclosure, Ventpac houses a high airflow centrifugal fan and positive shutoff damper with motor which are both very quiet in operation. ROOM ATMOSPHERE IS EXTRACTED through a louvred grille positioned in the end plate to the outside of the building. The unit is pre-wired to allow actuation from the external system control panel or a FIREMAN'S SWITCH.

FIREMAN'S SWITCH for Atrium / Stair SMOKE VENT - Open. Position. Fireman's Switch Override for ALL AHU's & Extract Fans -. Off Position ...

It is also proposed to convert the existing SMOKE VENT at the head of the common stair to automatic operation activated by the smoke detection system, together with a FIREMANS SWITCH at ground floor level.

| Note from asker to answererHi Guys, this is great. In fact both answers looked pretty spot-on to me in view of the surrounding context and I had wondered if it were something like this, myself. Your expertise in these technical matters confirms it - thank you so much. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

| commande arrêt pompier Fire Brigade isolator / isolating switch
Explanation: That is what the equivalent switch would be called for things like petrol pumps in a garage, or neon signs on a building (you see them all the time, if you look up — red switches with a loop to operate via a long pole)
However, I don't know if the same applies in this specific context — in this case, it would be to stop a function (smoke extraction) that had presumably only come into operation as a result of a fire. I don't know if one can use the same name for it then.
Note too, of course, that 'Fire Brigade' is very British — I don't know what the equivalent term might be for the Fire Service in the US or elsewhere!

Zero Ghits for these terms makes me worried that I am out-of-date here!
