French term or phrase: bilame
Hi, can you tell me if the 'bilame' here is referring to two-point measurement and if the 'une voie' is referring to just single channel thermograph which is maybe covered by the term ambient-temperature thermograph. I've not found many google matches for this combination but it is what seems logical to me although I am not at all sure. See

bimetal
Explanation:
Bimetallic strips (with a different metal on each side) are used in thermostats and other heat-related devices. Different metals have different coefficients of thermal expansion, and these devices use that to take advantage of that to measure/detect heat variations.

bimetallic strip - Relies on differing temperature coefficients of expansion; the strip deflects when one side of the strip expands more than the other, used in thermal switches, thermostats, thermometers, etc.

I think "single channel" and "bilame" are unrelated (though maybe having ONE bimetallic strip makes it "single channel").

Bimetal:
Two types of metal bonded into a strip and formed into a coil. Each type of metal has different thermal expansion characteristics, so the coil straightens when heated and coils up when cold. Bimetals are used mainly to open and close choke plates on carbureted vehicle.
Bimetal heat sensor:
(BHS) A strip (usually coiled) consisting of two metals with different expansion characteristics. Bimetal strips are used in thermostatically controlled devices because they move or bend toward the metal that expands least when heat is applied.
Bimetallic sensor:
Consists of thermocouple, an arm made of two dissimilar metals with different rates of thermal expansion, that flexes in accordance with temperature changes. Used as a temperature sensor. Also called bimetal sensor
Bimetallic strip:
Bonded strip composed of two metals with differing thermal expansion coefficients; the strip deflects when one side of the strip expands more than the other. Used e.g., in thermal switches.

neutral  Charles Hawtrey: Calling a "bilame" a thermocouple is unusual tho' theoretically correct; see Wikipedia for difference between bimetal, bimetallic and thermocouple. It's a bimetallic strip in this case.

-> Yes, I didn't sift through the refs very well, did I; though they were really only there to demonstrate that "bimetal(lic)" is not as much of a Gallicism as might first appear.

bimetallic strip

Explanation:
bilame is certainly bimetallic (although such an element could be based on polymers), and the explanations based on differential expansion are correct. However, I believe this device uses a mechanical link from the bms to the rotating drum, and therefore does NOT use a thermocouple, which generates a voltage which is a monotonically increasing function of temperature DIFFERENCE.
