French to English translations [Non-PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Engineering (general)
French term or phrase: P.V.
plans, fiche technique, notice de montage et d’entretien, P.V.

plans, technical data, assembly and upkeep instructions, ????

I have looked at other translations for the term but I don't think it applies. I could be wrong and it is a report. If so what report?

All I can come up with is those horrid things you get for speeding or double parking etc. - procès verbale. I can't imagine it's that.

English translation:procès-verbal
Explanation:
A procès verbal is not only a paper you get for speeding ;-)It is also the minutes of a meeting/proceeding, the report or the memorandum

See Wikipedia : "Procès-verbal (French procès, process, Late Latin verbalis, from verbum, word) is a legal term with a number of meanings:

in French law, a detailed authenticated account drawn up by a magistrate, police officer, or other person having authority of acts or proceedings done in the exercise of his duty.
in a criminal charge, a procès-verbal is a statement of the facts of the case
the written minutes of a meeting or assembly
in international law and diplomacy, a procès-verbal is the process of adopting corrections to the text of a treaty, by mutual agreement of the parties. As such it is a process of amendment, but is reserved for minor and non-controversial technical corrections that do not change the substance of the treaty. "

So, you can either choose to leave it in French "procès-verbal" and maybe insert a footnote, or you can translate with "report", etc.
In the present case, I'd say it's the report of the security norms check... what do you think? :-)

=>See "In the present case, I'd say it's the report of the security norms check". This kind of report is highly controlled and highly official in France, in fact, depending on the machine/building, the control is done (and the report written) by a special police force. In France we do 'prcès-verbaux" for anything... For example, when an association (1901 law) changes management, the new team has to ask for a "procès verbal de changement de bureau" at the Préfecture - this PV only contains a statement that the managing team has actually changed and states the names, date of birth, pace of residence and function of each member of the new team....;-)

Explanation:
p.V un procès-verbal est aussi un papier sur un pare-brise quand la voiture est mal garée ou garée là où c'est interdit appelé aussi une contravention, une contredanse (plus poétique)

Procès verbal

Explanation:
Your instinct saw right because P.V. doesnt only applies to fines but also apples more genereally formal reports written by somebody representing police or law enforcement describing what has been done.

agree  juliebarba: only going on this list given I'd have thought "Minutes" (of a meeting), or "meeting reports"

neutral  rufinus: But how does proces-verbal fit into this list? Drawings, fact sheets, assembly and maintenance instructions... meeting report? Minutes? It doesn't say anything about inspection, safety or anything along those lines.
