There's obviously a factor relating length in links to length in metres, and since, if they are measuring in links (as opposed to furlongs, of course), they necessarily know the precise dimensions of the links to be supplied, I don't really understand why they can't measure in metres!
For non-native-speakers, let us say, "link" here is an individual element of a chain, not the ACTUAL unit of linear measurement known as a "link":
link - a) one division (1/100) of a surveyor's chain, or Gunter's chain, equal to 7.92 inches (20.12 cm) ... b) 1/100 of an engineer's chain, equal to 1 foot (3.048 meters) ...
Yep, that's what Mr Webster says, but he means "0.3048 meters". |
