French term or phrase: âme en fils longitudinaux unidirectionnels

Source :matériaux composites composés d’une âme en fils longitudinaux unidirectionnels carbone ou verre recouverte de chaque côté d’un voile thermoplastique contrecollé".

This sentence is used to describe a type of machine. It is unclear what is meant by "fils" in this instance. Is it that the machine is composed of a wire core? But where does the carbon and glass fit in here?

This structure is very confusing. Please see my proposal as follows:

"composite materials composed of a longitudinal, one-directional wire core of carbon or glass, with each side surrounded by a thermosplastic, laminated sheet/cover".

If anybody has any suggestions on whether the meaning of my tranlslation is correct, I would be greatly appreciative. Many thanks

Tony M: Except note that is is plural. /usually, if used as an adj. in EN, I'd agree: carbon fiber core; but as here it is 'made up of ... fibers', I'd be tempted to keep the pl., if nothing else to make it clear it isn't just one big fiber (unlikely, I know!)

Un fil (bundle) semble composé de plusieurs fibres dans cette thèse. (Toutefois, j'ai un gros problème avec le "bundle" qui devient "tow" après infiltration, car je ne suis pas spécialiste.) En regardant Fig 1.14 dans la synthèse francaise et Fig. 7 dans la version anglaise, on retombe sur ses pieds (fil=bundle)

Composite bidirectionnel tissé :"Cette fois-ci, il faut tenir compte de la présence de macropores et des fils transversaux au sein du composite"...Brièvement, rappelons que le composite SiC/SiC 2D tissé étudié est formé d'un empilement de couches de tissu composées de fils de 500 filaments de SiC (Nicalon NLM 202) et infiltré par dépôt en phase vapeur d'une matrice SiC...

- la 2ème famille de fissures se forme dans les fils transversaux entre les fibres, un peu après le début de la fissuration de la 1ère famille jusqu'à une déformation environ égale à 0,20%.

- La 3ème famille de fissures est amorcée par les défauts matriciels des fils longitudinaux, et débute à une déformation de 0,20% jusqu'à la saturation du composite vers 0,80%. Il s'agit de fissures perpendiculaires à la direction des fibres dans les fils et localisées dans la matrice des fils longitudinaux.

The SiC/SiC composite consists of fabrics of Nicalon fibre bundles which have been infiltrated by chemical vapour deposition with a pyrocarbon layer as interphase (Fig.1-3). A bundle contains 500 SiC fibres (Fig.1), which we call a tow after infiltration...

- The second family of cracks appears in the transverse tows, between fibres, just after the saturation of the first family and is pursued until a strain of 0,2%. More critical than the first family, these cracks can propagate through the longitudinal tows (Fig.4).

- The third family of cracks appears within the matrix in the longitudinal tows at a strain of 0,2% (Fig.5). These cracks are perpendicular to the fibres. Assuming a constant interfacial shear stress between fibres and matrix, the matrix is totally reloaded along the debond, and there is a stress gradient in the fibres. Finally, the saturation of this last family is reached around a strain of 0,8%.
