you are quite right, "a spare" often means "a reserve item".
but I was pointing out that in the plural, the term "spares" alone will be generally be taken to mean "spare parts" ("pièces de réchange") rather than whole items of equipment. there's a big difference between "machine spares" and "spare machines"! |
