French to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Finance (general) / bank strategy
French term or phrase: mutualiste
I know this term has been discussed at length but I am keen to see how my peers would translate this tricky one. Here it is used with 'valeurs'...in the context of 'sociétale'

mutualist

Explanation:
I would suggest that "mutualist" or "cooperative" would do, and for "valeurs mutualistes" I would probably go for "mutualist values" or even "mutualist principles". Although mutual companies/societies are far more common in France than in les pays anglo-saxons, the concept is not unknown and there are plenty of refs out there.

Note to asker: certainly "cooperative" should be widely understood. A little research shows that CA makes extensive use of "mutualist" in its English language documents. If this is some kind of strategy paper, it's probably quite safe to assume that the audience is familiar with CA's mutualist history, structure and approach.

Asker: he thing is do you really think it would be generally understood? .

Asker: OK so am starting to waver, but asked an educated Brit recently who said 'you WHAT'?

Asker: wanted to give you points ROb because have used it in places but can't seem to split them

agree  Carlos Segura: Yes, or "mutualism values"/"mutualism principles".

-> Maybe "values/principles of mutualism", but not the other way around

agree  rkillings: At a time when "mutualisation" is widely prescribed as the solution to the euro zone's sovereign debt crisis, the objections to "mutualist" in English begin to fade away.
