French term or phrase: petite pêche
I know what it means, I just can't think how to say it :)

It's basically the opposite of deep-sea fishing. But it's NOT coastal fishing as this is listed seperately.

This is just about all the context I have:

...compte 1500 bateaux de pêche dont 80% de bateaux inscrits en petite pêche ou pêche côtière.

small-scale fishing

Would that do the job, Terry?

You might also try 'independent fishermen' (as distinct from industrial concerns)

Is there anything about 'petite pêche' that automatically makes you think it ISN'T deep-sea too? The fact that they contrast it with 'inshore fishing' (I'd prefer that to coastal, myself) makes me think it is more about the scale of it than about the distance from the shore...?

Thanks Tony, I'm still not entirely sure we got to the right answer but the discussion around this one was most helpful.

artisanal fishing

Language variant: local fishing

Explanation:
Je penses qu'on doit moduler la petite pêche en mode d'exploitation en Angalis: artisanal or local fishing un peu comme dans le secteur de l'agriculture artisanale et locale.

disagree  Tony M: 'artisanal' is not used in this context in EN; it is rather a faux ami, and your second ref. is clearly a not-very-well-translated FR site in the first place!

Notes to answerer
Asker: I considered independant fishermen but can't you have independant deep-sea fishermen? Small-scale is probably OK but I wondered if there wasn't some official term?

Asker: I don't know a lot about commercial fishing but I get the impression from my research that the scale and the distance from shore are [somewhat] linked. What I think I need is something between coastal/inshore and deep-sea. Is there such a thing as off-shore fishing in a commercial sense?

I agree with Tony M that "inshore" and "smaller-scale" are not mutually exclusive. The "ou" in the French sentence may be referring to the two types as alternate terms/contexts as opposed to separate activities.

Asker: Thanks but this document is about the financial aspects so, in this case at least, it is a commercial activity.
